Rants about Rei, CDG, etc.
I’ve always thought of Rei more of an artist than a designer, not that a title means anything anyway. Many people would look at her collections and deem them unwearable, and I don’t think that they are wrong at all. It’s just that if we switch our views upon Rei’s designs to actually see them in another light perhaps we would be able to accept the rationality in others’ ways of thinking, and learn to live with them. That is to say, if I could afford one of her ‘works’, I’d treat it as if I’d do likewise to a favorite painting or sculpture. It’s undeniable that some of Rei’s works are not proper for daily life context, correct me if I’m wrong, as the concept itself is bigger than the application. Of course, there are always exceptions when I saw CDG’s T-shirts floating on the web, and totally wearable, but that’s another story.
There will certainly be a group of ‘audience’ who would not understand her designs (not that she cares anyway), but I do not think that would make me think of them differently. Perception is entirely personal, so when it is made available to everyone, i.e when people try to like a designer because a lot of others do, it becomes kitsch. That also means that we cannot force others into liking a certain designer or mock them because they have an alienated goût. There are CDG’s collections that I like (e.g 1, 2 & 3), and others that I don’t (1 & 2). I think I started to like them better as I learned more about them. The impressions came vast and immediate, and they prolonged.
